Living in Monaco

Succumb to the quality of life in Monaco! Nestling at the heart of the French Riviera, the Principality remains a dream destination, the epitome of sophistication and pleasure for all.
The Principality of Monaco is an independent, sovereign State that has been ruled by the Grimaldi family for 700 years. The outstanding longevity of the dynasty has fuelled national unity between the Princes and the people of Monaco.
The regime in Monaco is that of a constitutional and hereditary monarchy.
Monaco is a State of Law that protects fundamental freedoms and rights. It has been a member-State of the United Nations since 1993. It is also part of the Euro zone.
Although the official language is French, English and Italian are also frequently used. Monaco?s traditional language, ?le monegł?, is spoken by its ?elders? and is taught at the Principality?s schools.
The currency is the euro, with Monegasque coins in circulation.

There are approximately 30,000 residents in the Principality. 5,100 members of the population are Monegasque, 12,000 are French and 5,000 are Italian. All in all, over 100 nationalities reside in Monaco.
The children of Monegasque residents can attend the various schools belonging to, or affiliated to, Monaco?s state education system. The curricula and qualifications obtained are the same as in France. The only unique aspects of education in Monaco are an introduction to English at primary school level, and learning the traditional language and the history of Monaco through to secondary school. The success rate at the French baccalaureate is close to 90%.
The Principality of Monaco boasts exceptional sunshine levels. Winters are mild without summers being stiflingly hot. Thanks to such an exemplary Mediterranean climate, Monaco is a prestigious location where life is pleasant all year round.
Don?t forget that the ski resorts of the Alpes du Sud are less than an hour away by car!
The Principality of Monaco is a particularly cherished haven of peace for many major reasons: it offers a wonderful environment and tight security; local infrastructures bring the Principality to within 2 hours of Europe?s major capitals; a host of financial establishments are on hand to satisfy the requirements of a demanding clientele; and there is no direct taxation in any form.

The quality of health facilities is of great importance to the Prince?s government:

- The Cardio-Thoracic Centre, which opened in 1987, treats thoracic and cardio-vascular pathologies.
- The Haemodialysis Centre, inaugurated in 1989, provides perfect care for kidney failure patients.
Throughout the year, the Principality of Monaco hosts sporting and artistic events of international importance and renown:
